TRIUMPH TR2 RESTORATION
The Adventures of Godot
Dec - 2018
The drivers front guard was probably typical of any un-restored TR with rust in the lower panel. Kilmartin of Delacombe Australia sell a lower panel replacement but this requires a seam weld across the lower half of the panel which can produce distortion of the panel. To avoid this I weld the seam with an aluminium bar at the back of the panel to absorb the excess heat and weld small sections each time. Unfortunately with about an inch to go I heard the panel pop and ended up with a warp in the panel. The panel was also twisted from accident damage so I took it to my panel beater. He spent 19 hours getting it straight but fortunately didn't charge me the full rate.
When I reinstalled the guard the shape had changed and I needed to redo my gaps to the door and reposition the A pillar guard mounting bracket which has taken 3 days. We are now back to where I had hoped to be 2 weeks with the panels primed and ready to be welded in place.

Cut the old panel in a straight line
Attach new panel without distorting (I failed)
And then get the panel beater to flatten
