TRIUMPH TR2 RESTORATION
The Adventures of Godot
B-Pillars
I thought it was worth making a note on the B pillars. The B pillars on the car were very average as they had been cut through when the rear body had been replaced and they cut through the quarter panel to make the connection.
I though the best option was to give up on the existing ones and get new ones given I was replacing the sills anyway so I purchased ones from Rimmer Brothers. What I received was absolutely nothing like what was going to work. The pillar has several mounting faces to the sill which is a box section. Shouldn't be too had to make anything mate to a box section but it appears to be beyond the capability of Rimmer Brothers suppliers. The photos attached shows the story. Also the door latch is retained by 4 screws but that again appeared to be too difficult as only 2 would fit which didn't matter too much because the plate was not actually tapped! Again not too much of a problem because the quality of the steel was so poor you could actually run a screw into the hole. Too bad if your screw stripped after you finished the paint job because it was going to happen sooner or later! Also the shape of the door mating face was totally incorrect and needed to be cut and shut.
The long and short of this story is that the post supplied by Rimmer Brothers at the cost of many hundreds of dollars was cut into 4 sections and rebuild so that it was near useful. I would have been better off and a lot wealthier if I cut the original post apart and rewelded that.
After probably a month or so of agonising and cutting and shutting I ended up with a post of some sort which I was not at all happy with but fitted the bill. I am just glad it is not at all visible after I finished.
If you are considering using a Rimmer Brothers panel or part DO NOT BOTHER! Save yourself money and heartache and investigate other options.
The fit of the B pillar to the sill was so bad I had to cut the pillar apart and reassemble to be able to weld it together
'adjusting' the shape
I had to remake the quarter panel to fit the b pillar
